This page is to give advice and guidance to patients on

how to access other Community services like Dentists and Opticians
manage long-term conditions
deal with minor injuries and illnesses that may not require advice and support from the Practice.

Dental Problems

Mouth, tooth or gum problems can be dealt with by your local dentist. You can view a list of local dental practices here.

If you are not registered with a dental practice or you are experiencing dental pain out of hours you can contact the emergency dental helpline via CAV 24/7 on 0300 10 20 247.

A member of the primary care team will triage you and if you require an appointment you will be booked into the emergency dental clinics at the Dental Hospital or St David’s Hospital.

You will receive advice on pain relief and will be, if appropriate, booked into the most appropriate emergency location for your problem, which may be a Primary Care Dentist, Community Dentist or the University Dental Hospital.

Opticians & Eye Care

An optometrist is the best option as they have all the equipment and technology. Most opticians have free of charge emergency appointments available every dat You can view a list of opticians here.

Generally a visit to an optometrist is also free if:

You’re aged under 16
You’re aged 16, 17 or 18 and are in full-time education
You’re aged 60 or over
You’re registered as partially sighted (sight impaired) or blind (severely sight impaired)
You’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
You’ve been advised by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) that you’re at risk of glaucoma
You’re on certain benefits (Income Support, Income related Employment and Support Allowance, Tax Credit, Income Based Jobseekers Allowance)
If you are on a low income, you may be able to get help with the cost of sight tests, glasses and contact lenses through the NHS Low income Scheme.
