Shout

Shout is the UK's first and only free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging service for anyone who is struggling to cope.

We have taken more than two million conversations with people who are sad, worried, lonely or suicidal and who need urgent, in-the-moment support.

As a digital service, Shout became vital during Covid-19, as one of the few mental health services able to operate as normal at this time. We have seen the need for our support remain high through the UK's cost of living crisis.

Since the launch of Shout in 2019, we have:

  • Taken more than two million text conversations with 675,000 children, young people and adults in distress
  • Recruited and trained over 2,500 Shout Volunteers
  • Had around 2,000 conversations every day. As a 24/7 service, texters contact us round the clock
  • Most commonly supported texters with the following issues: suicide (35%), depression (31%), anxiety (30%), relationships (25%), loneliness (16%) and self-harm (15%).

If you are in an emergency, including if you’re worried about risk to your own life or someone else, call 999 and ask for an ambulance, or go straight to A&E if you can.

The NHS gives guidance on when to call 999 or go to A&E. A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a physical one.
